Originating from that which is deemed “transgressive” or offensive, this new wave of extreme films does so under the origins of French film makers. Arriving from that, these films have fallen under the modern categorization of what some call “French Extreme” or “ New French Extremity “. The New French Extremity is a term used to describe transgressive French films, usually horror, that mix strong narratives and performances with brutal violence. Many of these films are criminally unseen, and some have directors that went on to become big in Hollywood, but all of the films pack a punch. Although often perceived as just a nasty sub-genre of horror (or torture porn with a French accent), New French Extremity is really more of an organic wave of deliberately transgressive cinema produced in France over the last two decades. Its true nature is in an uneasy nexus between arthouse, body horror, slasher and exploitation films. The most interesting position statement in the article is that US "torture-porn" horror basically wimps out in favor of entertainment value, while the French New Wave hits viewers right between the eyes without any seemingly redeeming social value other than disgust and frustration with the human condition.
